The Rooftop Meadow - Brooklyn, New York

In Brooklyn, New York, a roof top meadow oasis crowns a 100-year old brownstone. A sustainable vegetative rooftop renovation, this green roof is designed to provide energy conservation, storm water management and utility rebates. The key to a green roof assembly is the principal roof system that underlies the soil and vegetation - it must provide secure, waterproof protection for the building and a foundation for the soil and vegetation in the green roof.

Prospect Architecture relied on the expertise of Jim Nevin of Viridian Systems to provide consulting services and corresponding membrane materials for the roof’s base. Because the deck was wood, a torched-in-place roof system wouldn’t work and there were concerns about installing the membrane directly to the deck due to potential fastener back out. For this reason, Nevin had Viridian Recovery Board installed into Viridian SF Insulation adhesive to assure a smooth “fastener free” surface. He then had two plies of smooth, extra strong Performance Ply membrane mopped into BUR 202 as a base and MS-4 granulated cap sheet mopped into BUR 202. Nevin knew the roof system had to be sound to perform under the specific climate, construction and usage conditions of the New York brownstone roof.

The vegetative roof was intensive, meaning it had larger plants than extensive green roofs. An Ipe wood deck, similar to Teak, was installed on part of the roof, with a metal and Ipe wood constructed awning above the deck for partial shelter. An aluminum-clad bulkhead along with a wall and trellis were also installed. New air conditioner compressors were concealed behind the trellis wall and solar panels were installed, which are expected to provide 50-60 percent of the building’s power, including the a/c system.

The brownstone’s rooftop meadow is a serene escape and allows for panoramic views of the city while providing a sustainable and enjoyable environment.
